What is direct storage?

Direct Storage is a new feature in Windows that is designed to allow PC games to take full advantage of extremely fast NV SSDs!

1.) Foreword to How to Direct Storage!

The development will not immediately lead to a graphics revolution; computers with Windows 11 and DirectX 12 will benefit here. Many of the gaming PCs have an SSD on the SATA port, or a modern NV model with an M2 connection. This naturally raises the question why the loading times are not even faster. Of

course, it is not just the speed of the hard drives that is to blame, especially not in the SSD area. Especially with the NVM models with M2 connections.

These loading times are of course due to the gigantic textures that have to get from the hard drive to the graphics memory, but that is not all, because they also have to be decompressed and that takes time. This is also the potential place where Direct Storage intervenes and thus leads to an improvement in loading times.

2.) How Direct Storage works!

Direct Storage is a solution that ensures that the compressed data is forwarded directly from the NVMe SSD via the RAM to the graphics card in the future. The data ends up compressed directly in the VRAM of the graphics card and is then decompressed directly by it.

The significant increase in speed comes not only from the direct transfer to the graphics card, but also from the fact that the decompression, i.e. the decoding, of the textures takes place in the graphics card itself, which of course has a lot of computing units, which can then be done much faster.

The Direct Storage function will of course lead to better or shorter loading times, which will certainly please gamers, the disadvantage is that you no longer have time to get a coffee.

3.) Understand Direct Storage!

In the sketch you can see the division of work, currently it goes via the RAM into the CPU for compression, then it goes back to the RAM and the graphics card, or rather to the video memory of the graphics card.

With the new "Direct Storage" technology, it goes directly via the RAM into the graphics card and the decompression takes place directly in the VPAM, i.e. in the graphics card itself, which creates an advantage.

( ... see image 1 )

You can now see directly where the advantage comes from, slower hard drives will probably also benefit from it, because the main saving comes from the faster decompression and direct transfer to the graphics card.

4.) More tips on the topic!

In the future, developers will be able to create much larger and more detailed game worlds using this type of technology. Direct storage will therefore also mean that the next generation of games will be even larger, and then the advantage will disappear as the textures will also be larger.
